Beginner Guide to AI Comic Creation: No Art Skills? No Problem.
So you want to make comics.
But you can’t draw a straight line. You’ve never used Photoshop. The last time you tried to sketch, it looked like a potato.
I hear you. I was the same.
That’s why I wrote this beginner guide to AI comic creation. No prior experience. No fancy hardware. Just you, your imagination, and a free Elser account.
By the end of this guide, you’ll have created your first 4-panel comic. I promise.
What You Need to Know Before Starting
AI comic generators are not magic. They won’t read your mind. But if you learn a few basic principles, you can produce comics that look 80-90% as good as hand-drawn ones – in a fraction of the time.
The three most important skills:
1. Writing clear prompts (telling the AI exactly what you want).
2. Choosing the right style (matching the tone of your story).
3. Using character locking (keeping faces consistent).
That’s it. You don’t need to know about layers, bezier curves, or color theory.
Step 1: Sign Up and Explore
Go to Elser AI. Click “Start Free Trial.” No credit card needed.
Once inside, take 5 minutes to click around. Look at the “Styles” menu. Scroll through “Templates.” Get comfortable.
Step 2: Pick a Simple Idea
Don’t overthink. Your first comic should be 4 panels about something you experience every day.
Examples:
- “Dog wants a walk, owner ignores, dog brings leash, owner sighs and goes.”
- “Phone battery at 1%. Searching for charger. Finds it. Port is loose.”
- “Making coffee. Spills grounds. Cleans up. Finally drinks. It’s cold.”
See? Relatable, short, and no complex action.
Step 3: Choose Layout and Style
Layout: Classic 2×2 (4 panels in a square). Perfect for beginners.
Style: Start with “Chibi” (cute, simple, forgiving). Or “Pencil Sketch” (rough, artistic, doesn’t need to be perfect). Avoid “Photorealistic” for your first try – it’s harder to get right.
Step 4: Write Your First Prompt
Click on Panel 1. In the prompt box, write:
“Chibi style. A cute dog sitting next to the front door, looking up at its owner with big eyes. Living room background. Simple lines.”
Click Generate. Wait 20 seconds. See the result? Not perfect? That’s fine. Click Generate Again with the same prompt. AI is random – the second or third try is often better.
Tip: Keep prompts under 20 words. Too many details confuse the AI.
Step 5: Generate the Remaining Panels
Panel 2: “Owner sitting on couch, ignoring dog, looking at phone.”
Panel 3: “Dog holding leash in its mouth, tail wagging.”
Panel 4: “Owner smiling, putting on shoes, dog jumping excitedly.”
Generate each. If a panel looks bad, regenerate or tweak the prompt slightly.
Step 6: Add Speech Bubbles (Optional)
Click the speech bubble icon on Panel 4. Type “Finally!” Elser will place a bubble near the dog’s mouth.
For silent panels, leave them empty. Many comics work without words.
Step 7: Export and Share
Click Export. Choose “Images (PNG)” and “Square 1:1.” Download the 4 images. Then post them to Instagram or Twitter as a carousel.
Congratulations. You just made a comic.
Troubleshooting for Beginners
Problem: The dog looks different in every panel.
Solution: Before generating, lock the dog as a character. Go to Characters, upload the best panel 1 dog face as a reference, then regenerate panels 2-4 with the lock active.
Problem: The background is empty or weird.
Solution: Add location words to your prompt: “living room with couch and lamp” or “kitchen with refrigerator.”
Problem: The hands look like claws.
Solution: Hide them. Rewrite prompt: “dog sitting, paws hidden behind body” or “owner with hands in pockets.”
Problem: It takes too long.
Solution: Free tier may have queues. Try generating during off-hours (evenings in your timezone) or upgrade to paid for priority.
What to Try Next After Your First Comic
Once you’ve made one strip, experiment:
- Different style – Convert the same comic to shonen or watercolor. Elser has a “restyle” button.
- Longer strip – Try 8 panels (2×4) or a vertical webtoon layout.
- Character locking – Create a recurring character and use it in multiple comics.
- Story mode – Type a paragraph and let GPT-2 break it into panels.
Common Beginner Questions
Q: Can I sell comics made with AI?
A: Yes, Elser’s terms allow commercial use. However, you cannot claim the AI art as hand-drawn. Be transparent.
Q: Do I need to credit Elser?
A: Not required, but appreciated. A small “Made with Elser AI” helps others discover the tool.
Q: How many free credits do I get?
A: The trial gives enough for 20-30 panels. That’s 5-7 short comics.
Q: What if I run out of credits?
A: You can buy pay-as-you-go credits starting at $5, or subscribe for unlimited at $15/month.
You’re Ready.
No more excuses. You have the tools. You have the guide. Now go make that first comic.
